The budget of Thor Ragnarok is $180 million. The film proves to be successful because their box office is $848 million which shows that Thor Ragnarok has made a profit of around $668 million. The budget of the previous Thor films is less than this film where the first Thor film is $150 million and the second film budget is $170 million but the second film went over budget to $272 million. Given that Marvel Studios is a well-known company, they are guaranteed to bring in audiences to watch a Marvel film and therefore maintains their highly known reputation. For example, the second film of Thor- The Dark World, audiences did not enjoy as much. However, it did earn box office profit of $644.6 million because it is a Marvel film.

The budget for Thor Ragnarok is used for hiring people, equipment, location, transport, distribution and costume.
When hiring people for Thor Ragnarok, the actors and production crew will be hired and paid for. Actors would be paid more money because most of the actors of Thor Ragnarok are Hollywood big star actors meaning they would earn more money, for example, Chris Hemsworth earned $31.5 million for starring in the film which is the highest salary paid for this film. Part of the budget the producers has uses it on actors salary, to be able to pay their actors. During the production stage, the production company had spent over $70 million ($100 million in AUD) on hiring approximately 750 people in Queensland to be actors seeing that the location of the film will be filmed in Queensland. Not only the producers have to use the budget to be able to pay the actors and production crew but also their insurance so that they Marvel can protect their reputation and be able to ensure the safety of the actors and production crew.
For equipment, the producers find a company to be able to create weapons and pieces of equipment used for the film. In Thor Ragnarok, part of the film Thor uses his hammer- Mjolnir, but it got destroyed, the hammer would not be expensive to create because the hammer is reused from the previous Marvel films like the previous Thor films and Avengers. Equipment for production would also go under the budget; the production company would need to use cameras, lights and sound recorder.
For location, the production company would need permission from either the government or the owner of the location to be able to film and use the location. This relates to finance because the production company may need to use the film budget to rent to the location for several days, some scenes in Thor Ragnarok uses a studio to film as they are set in unrealistic locations such as Asgard.
For transport, the production company will have to arrange a flight plan to get actors to the location needed to shoot the film as well as plan the actor's accommodation, therefore, travel expense would go in an account of the budget this film has.
For distribution, the production company will negotiate a distribution plan with the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures company (their distributor) as to where the film is distributed and within each country. The distribution company will negotiate with each cinema about the housing as to which cinema house Thor Ragnarok will be shown to the audience for a period of time because Thor Ragnarok is a Hollywood film and is made on a large scale production, the film would be shown in a larger house in the cinema. However, if the gross profit declines, then the cinemas will have to put Thor Ragnarok into a more smaller house. A commission fee to the distribution company and cinemas will go account to the budget of Thor Ragnarok.
For costumes, Marvel Studios hires a costume designer to design the costumes for the characters in Thor Ragnarok, the cost of hiring a costume designer goes under the budget the film has. The costume designer for Thor Ragnarok is Mayes Rubeo who designed other costumes for other films like Avatar. She created the costume for The Grandmaster and Hela and as well as 1700 other costumes including the extras in the film. Not only the budget for costumes includes the cost of hiring the costume designer, but also the cost of materials needed to create the costumes for the film.
The production company, Marvel Studios funded the finance the budget of the film because as they are a large scale, they can make a profit from creating the earlier Marvel films. In other films, some companies are willing to help the producers by sponsoring them an amount of money in condition; the film has to include a product of the sponsors. This creates a bit of a win-win situation because the film implicitly promotes the sponsor's products in return, the sponsors can sponsor money to help the budget of the film. When Thor Ragnarok was filming in the sound studio, the government have helped the production by funding the sound studio $16 million to ensure that the schedule was on track.
