The idea was first brought up soon after the release of the second Thor film where Chris Hemsworth wanted more opportunities to play as Thor which is then it was decided that his contract with Marvel would be extended. In January 2014 it was announced by Marvel Studios that the third film of Thor would be released and the screenwriters have started brainstorming the ideas and writing the scripts before heading to the pre-production stage in January 2016. The deadline the screenwriter has was until April 2015 where they had to submit a first draft of the film to the producer. It is revealed that the name of the film would be called Thor Ragnarok in October 2014 and the original release date would be in July 2017. During the pre-production stage, the producers were looking for Hollywood actors to cast into the film where the cast list was revealed in May 2016. Most of the cast lists are returning characters from the previous Thor films where Tom Hiddleston would play as Loki again, Anthony Hopkins would play as Odin again and Mark Ruffalo would be played as Hulk and would be his first time playing in the Thor films (as he played in the previous Avengers film and had his film). In addition, new characters would be included in the film like Cate Blanchett playing as Hela or Tessa Thompson playing as the Valkyrie.

The film has begun filming in July 2016 and finished shooting in October 2016. After that, it is the editors' job to edit the film and add CGI effects in the film. Initially, the release date of this film was going to be in July 2017 but has been delayed to the end of 2017 in February 2015 because Marvel Studios wanted to release Spider-Man Homecoming before Thor Ragnarok because of that, the release date of Spider-Man Homecoming is July 2017. This has also affected more future Marvel films because Black Panther has been pushed back to release in July 2018.
