Unit 26: Film studies
Task 3
If this film Django Unchained were to be remarketed, the production context I want to remarket this film to would be an independent production context because they are usually low budget such as spaghetti western films and is filmed outside the film studio, like Django Unchained where most of the scenes are filmed outdoors.
I would remarket the film to audiences in the early 1900’s when racism is a big thing back in the days, and it is still happening today, but not as problematic as back in the 1900's. Although slavery was abolished in 1865, it has been 35 years, and it would remind the audiences of slavery.
This film wouldn’t be redistributed internationally until the film becomes a success in America. If the film was to be redistributed internationally, it would first distribute to the Japanese audience because racism is not very common over there, it would educate the Japanese audience about racism. Tarantino also has an interest in Japanese films (which is why “Kill Bill” has some elements of Japanese in it). It will be distributed through theatres because VHS, DVD or Blu-ray wasn't invented back in the 1900s, therefore, people would have to go and watch the film in a cinema house.
Poster remake

In this poster and trailer, I have made this into the racist film where black peoples being tortured. The plot would be different from the film where the black people are the villain, and the white people are the heroes of the film.
The trailer would meet my target audience because it would please the white people since back in the 1900's, they don't care as much towards the black people. Therefore, the trailer would make Django look like a villain.
It would suit the Japanese audience because it would educate them about racism since racism is not common in Japan.
Not only there are translated subtitle in the Japanese trailer, but the music is also different. which can suit the Japanese audience.
Trailer remake

In this poster and trailer. It would appeal to the Japanese audiences because the poster says "Samurai" in Japanese and the trailer talks about the 8 Bushido codes.
It would suit the Japanese audiences it would remind the Japanese's about the samurai era which ended not so long ago. Unlike how the whites see the blacks, the Japanese see the blacks as heroes between 1900-1945 (quoted as "Champions of the darker races". The black people would view the Japanese as an ally.
For the Merchandise, I have created a dress that is similar to the blue boy suit in Django Unchained. It suits the target audiences because there weren't merchandises like t-shirts or toys back in the 1900's. So creating the dress would satisfy mainly the females and this is how women's in the 1900's would look worn.
When distributing this type of merchandise, it would be sold in a tailor shop because of that where people got clothing back in 1900. It would also be produced there.

For the Merchandise, I have created a hand fan of Django that would suit the Japanese audiences. It would suit the Japanese audience's because if they see Django on a hand fan, they will use the fan as part of entertainment (for geishas) and fans has been a big part of Japanese culture for a long time.
Instead of the cherry blossom in which fan usually has, it would be cotton instead since the cotton plantation was included in the film. I've decided to make Django and Schultz on a horse because horses were around as a form of transportation back in the 1900's as well as included in the film.
When distributing the fan to my target audience, It would be sold at an antique shop or a fan shop because that would be where fans are usually sold at in the 1900's as souvenir shops weren't there back in the 1900's. Manufacturers would handmade the fan by using materials like wood and paper.
